Wavy Functions, (Imaginary Objects)

March 23rd – May 13th, 2016
Events, Exhibitions

Dates: March 23 - May 13
Opening Reception: Wednesday, March 23 from 6-8pm.

The idea that our familiar reality seems to wither away the closer it is observed is a major source of inspiration for Corporan, and is revealed in the themes of focused observation, the desire to see deeper,  and the relationship between the real and the imagined that pervades his work.

Wavy Functions, is a show of James Corporan’s recent sculptural works. It is a collection of objects and images with which the artist attempts to create contemplation and internalization of the truly bizarre nature of reality. The title Wavy Functions is adapted from the physics term “the wave function,” a mathematical equation that while describing the behavior of subatomic particles with astonishing accuracy, also tells us some very counter-intuitive things about these particles and therefore reality.

The work includes a group of glass lenslike objects which are meditations on observation and its limits; these were painstakingly ground and polished into lenticular shapes in a process that is itself meditative. Also included are blown glass objects illuminated from within, and folded paper objects that explore the bending and warping of space.
