We all have varied and intimate experiences with materials in our daily lives. In this introductory class, hands-on experimentation and conversation will guide our search for intimacy with molten glass. Through glassblowing exercises and experimental hot casting, we will allow the material to lead our process and pose new questions to explore. What makes glass self-animate? How does it lend to particular forms? Can we feel the elasticity of different glass types? How might we shape the glass without tools? What is achieved by this kind of material practice?
Throughout this course we will look at artists who embody making and knowing with emphasis on materiality. Together we will practice being perceptually open to the inherent power of materials, allowing the glass to communicate with our instincts to make, test, manipulate, remake. The exercises in this class will offer a variety of blown and hot casting possibilities to serve students’ individual ideas and projects. All levels are welcome.
