The cold shop is not only a place to polish pieces from the hot shop or kilns, but a studio used to create artwork from start to finish. In this class, students will investigate what the entire cold shop has to offer, and will gain a deeper philosophical understanding of the applications of each tool. This class will focus heavily on problem solving as a means of understanding and applying techniques. We will cover basic grinding and polishing, sculptural carving, sand carving, hand grinding and polishing, surface patterning, and lathe cutting. This class will serve as a great introduction to the machines in the cold shop for the novice, as well as an opportunity for the more experienced student to add complexity and take their cold working to the next level. Students are encouraged to come with tough questions and tricky ideas. Each student will leave with a repertoire of new techniques and a new perspective on cold working.
