Concentrating on Connections: Introduction to Borosilicate

Jessica Landau

In this one-week intensive evening course, students will concentrate on developing a safe and effective practice of working with borosilicate glass (aka Pyrex). This course is open to all skill levels and provides a strong foundation upon which to build each individual’s voice with the material. Classroom time will be fully dedicated to the fundamentals of connecting two pieces of glass and corresponding exercises will guide students through the creation of jewelry pieces, sculptures, marbles, ornaments, and even goblets. The materials used will be quite simple: basic hand tools like tweezers and picks, glass rods and tubes, and a torch. Through repetition, students will advance their hand skills simultaneous to learning about color application, fun techniques, and how to successfully connect two pieces of glass. A sketchbook is recommended.
