CAD to Cast: 3D printing to Kiln Cast Glass with Rebecca Erde

July 14th - August 18th
Rebecca Erde |

Class Description:

In this technique-focused class, we will bring your digital concepts to life in glass by learning the basics of 3D modeling, 3D printing, mold making, and casting. We will focus on 3D modeling using TinkerCAD (https://www.tinkercad.com/), a free introductory web app for 3D design. Students will then 3D print their designs using Ultimaker 3D printers. Once students have completed the rubber and investment molds of their 3D prints, we will cast our pieces in glass and coldwork them to create finished forms. No glass or 3D modeling experience necessary. Please note, there will be a certified Service Dog in the studio during the class.

What to Expect:

This class is open to all levels. Class demonstrations usually precede work time. The first 4 hour class will introduce 3D modeling and 3D printing. The following week, we will move into the mold shop to create rubber molds. In the third class, we will create wax positives of our 3D prints and begin our investment molds, which we will finish in the fourth class. The fifth class will cover kiln usage as we prepare our molds to be fired. In the final class, we will divest our casts and learn the basics of coldworking. Students will make an approximately 2” x 2” x 2” form and can create multiples. Please keep in mind that this is not a project based class, but a class to learn the process and technique. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration. Please note, there will be a certified Service Dog in the studio during the class.
