Carina Cheung

Carina Cheung is interested in the essence of all things and the cyclic dynamism of life. Her awareness of the subtleties that distinguish handmade and machine made processes in glass allow her to create objects that capture transient sounds, patterns and forms found in nature. Born in 1984 in Hong Kong, Carina Cheung received her BFA in Glass from Rhode Island School of Design. She is a recipient of the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Fine Arts Travel Fellowship, which granted her the opportunity to study and work in Italy and India; as well as a recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship, which led her to explore glass production in China. She was recently a CGCA Fellow at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, Millville, NJ. She currently lives and works in Putnam Valley, NY.

edison Osorio Zapata

Born in Venezuela to Colombian migrants, Edison spent most of his youth in Australia, where he trained in the culinary arts. This skill took him to Japan where he opened a restaurant in Tokyo. In Japan, he developed an interest in art and pottery, and he decided to return to Australia to pursue a glass major at the Canberra School of Arts.

The following year he received a Monbukagakusho scholarship from the Japanese government and completed an MFA from Tama Art University in Tokyo 2007, where he also taught part-time. After graduating he held a research / teaching position at Nagoya Art University. He has recently completed a fellowship at WheatonArts and later this year will be a Visiting Artist at UrbanGlass.
He has been investigating culture and language, producing objects and installations that explore the mechanics of printing from glass onto different materials, as well as use glass to harness and distort imagery.

In Japan he has attended and taught workshops in various glass techniques. His work has shown in Australia and Japan in solo and group exhibitions, and has been published in New Glass magazine, Asian Art News, and Craft Arts International.

"I create work from my own experience as a foreigner. Being a migrant myself, the foreign perspective has given me sensitivity to issues in this area, especially communication. After leaving Venezuela as a child I experienced dislocation, and assimilation while absorbing cultural changes. This process, though at times difficult, has provided me with three languages, Spanish, Japanese and English. It has been my driving force to create."

C. Matthew Szösz

Born in Rhode Island, Matthew Szosz has received a BFA, a BID (Industrial Design), and a MFA (Glass) from Rhode Island School of Design. He has worked professionally in art and art related fields in Rhode Island, New Mexico and California for the last ten years. Recently he has received the Pilchuck Scholarship, a Stein Fund Grant and the Award of Excellence in Graduate Studies from RISD. He was an Artist in Residence at Pilchuck in 2007, and a Wheaton Fellow in 2008.
