OPENING: “New Works” from Tobias Møhl debut at Traver

FILED UNDER: Exhibition, New Work, News, Opening

Venetian inspired, but with an unmistakable Scandinavian twist, the glass work of Tobias Møhl is simplistic, yet striking. His blown glass platters, vessels, and bowls, almost exclusively in shades of black, gray, and white, are characterized by lace-like intricacy surrounded by flowing, clean lines. The Danish artist’s newest exhibition—aptly titled “New Works”—will be on display at the Traver Gallery from August 7th through the 31st.

Møhl is a part of a generation of Danish glass artists that managed to garner international popularity in the 1990s, advancing the field technologically while, aesthetically, paying homage to the past. Møhl’s work is exemplary of this movement, taking classic Venetian glass technique from the 16th century and revitalizing it and controlling color to give the work a place in a modern minimalist context.

“New Works” will be shown along with the Gallery’s “Summer Feature,” which includes contemporary glass work by Nancy Callan, Dante Marioni, Australian artist Mel Douglas, and Italian virtuoso Lino Tagliapietra.

A special reception for both exhibitions, which will be attended by Møhl, will be held on August 7th from 5pm to 8pm.
